    Calculating WinQuota limits

Note: if one directory belongs to multiple quota settings, the strictest quota limits will be used.

Note: The limits like X GB for “Anyone” group is being used via the following rule:

the limits will be applied to the entire folder (with sub-folders); and the capacity of folder will be limited to X GB (so complete directory contents will not reach space more than X GB). Every attempt to use more space than X GB in directory will indicate "No space left".

For case you specify “Anyone”, it means the summarized content for the folder will be limited to specific size, without any dependency of users/groups/whatever. In other words, all your users will not use more X GB at one time; this diesn't mean every user will have X GB of private space. This is “shared” space like disk with limited capacity.

All quota settings are inherited from parents, and you are able to add new quota restrictions for sub-folders. Below there are several basic examples that describe how to play quota settings for directories.

    Calculating WinQuota limits: 0th example

    Specify quota limits for “Shared”:

    • anyone, X GB

So the limits will be played by the following way:

    • The total directory capacity will be limited to X GB.

    Calculating WinQuota limits: 1st example

For example, you have a folder named “Shared” and want to apply quota limitations for a group “admins”. In addition, you want to make a folder “others” as a sub-folder of “Shared”, but with more specific limits. Let's clarify settings step by step.

    Specify quota limits for “Shared”:

    • anyone, X GB
    • Admins, Y GB

So the limits will be played by the following way:

    • In case X > Y, anyone except admins will be able to fill up to X GB, but 'admins' will be able to use only Y GB.
    • In case Y > X, all users will be limited to X GB.
    • The total directory capacity will be limited to X GB.

By adding a sub-folder and its quota settings:

    • Guests, Z GB

    You'll have the following equations:

    • In case Z > X, V > X, the limits will be reduced to X GB for any user.
    • In case Z < X, both "admins and "guests" will be able to fill up to X GB, but with the maximum limit of Y GB for "admins" and Z GB for "guests".
    • The total directory capacity will be limited to X GB minus actual size of parent directory.

    Calculating WinQuota limits: 2nd example

    Specify quota limits for “Shared”

    • Admins, X GB

By adding sub folder “other” and its quota settings:

    • Guests, Y GB

You'll have the following rules defined:

    • “admins” will be able to fill X GB
    • “guests” will use up to Y GB
    • The total space for “admins” and “guests” will reach to (X + Y) GB.
    • The total directory capacity will not be limited for all other categories of users.

Note: selecting “Shared” folder in GUI, you'll see the only one quota limit (e.g. “admins”, X GB) you set; but selecting “Shared/other” you'll see the all applicable quota limits (e.g. “admins”, X GB and “guests”, Y GB). The right column at the quota limits list indicates the folder where quota settings were defined.
